Listed below is an overview of each of our consultants and their general geographical area. We would normally instruct the most suitable consultant for each case taking into account the steps identified either by you, by Counsel or by our Principal Consultant in our quote. Of course, if you wish to instruct a specific consultant because you have worked with them before or just heard their excellent reputation we will happily accommodate that.
Dave Burgess (Principal Consultant South UK)
David Burgess is a Forensic Collision Investigator and Vehicle Examiner and our Principal Consultant for the Southern half of the UK. Having joined Dorset Police in 1982 as a Cadet, Dave went on to spend the majority of his service (16 of his 24 years) in Road Traffic Policing, both in cars and on motorcycles. He first trained in Road Accident Investigation with Dorset Police in 1994 and remained in the service’s Collision Investigation Unit until his retirement from the police in 2006 when he took Associateship with Wayman. Dave’s decision to join the team at Wayman was due to “The variety of work from a long established business with a reputation for quality of work within the legal sector”.
Dave describes himself as meticulous and methodical. He enjoys the challenge of identifying the cause(s) of Road traffic Accidents sometimes from the most scant evidence. Having moved into the Expert Witness fraternity Dave has found the variety of work that is available to him as our Principal Consultant, covering a large geographical area, ever more stimulating. His understanding and tolerant nature is ideal in an environment where a more bullish approach might be overbearing.

Dave lives in Dorset and is married with grown up children. In his spare time he enjoys “causing traffic jams with my caravan at weekends all year round,” and following Chelsea.

Mike Irwin (Principal Consultant North UK)
Mike Irwin is a Forensic Collision Investigator and Vehicle Examiner and our Principal Consultant for the Northern half of the UK. Mike served 30 years in the Police Service of which 26 where on Motor Patrols and the last 16 were as a Road Traffic Accident Investigator. Upon his retirement from the police he took the first Associateship position with Wayman being recruited by our CEO Len Wayman. Mike’s decision to join the team at Wayman was due to “The chance to continue the type of work I was doing before retirement, throughout the UK and the opportunity to work in foreign countries.”
Mike’s enthusiasm for collision investigation was born out of an Interest in mechanics, physics and pure and applied mathematics. He was one of the first officers in Northumbria Police to pass the City & Guilds Accident Investigation Course even though, at the time, he was not a member of the Collision Unit.
Mike describes himself as warm, totally professional and at times self-deprecating. His avuncular style always puts the customer first. Mike maintains the noble attitude that his responsibility is to “search for the truth”, and his passion for his work never falters. He continues to enjoy all aspects of collision investigation, but mainly the satisfying of an enquiring mind.

Roly Hockenhull (Senior Consultant Central/ East Anglia)
Roly Hockenhull is a Forensic Collision Investigator and Vehicle Examiner and our Senior Consultant for Central UK and East Anglia. After 30 years in Bedfordshire Police culminating in his position as the Senior Collision Investigator, Roly embarked on a career as an Expert Witness. Roly was drawn to Wayman because of our status as a,” well established professional organisation with a high reputation for quality of service.” Roly’s interest in Road Accident reconstruction was an extension of his enthusiasm for mathematics and physics, and when he was given the opportunity to utilise those skills by becoming a qualified Police Collision Investigator, he jumped at the chance.
Roly describes himself as someone who always relishes a challenge. He prides himself on his ability to communicate with people on all levels. He is methodical, and tenacious in his investigations and places great import on punctuality. His approach to his work as an Independent Forensic Expert Witness is to fully investigate all aspects of cases in which he is instructed, and to leave no stone unturned. His work often draws positive comment from our clients, which Roly finds particularly motivating.

Roly lives in Bedfordshire and is married with grown up children. He is a keen motorcyclist and enjoys watching motorcycle road racing. On numerous occasions he has marshalled at the Isle of Man TT races together with his son who is also a keen follower of the sport. He enjoys watching Cricket and Rugby and is a supporter of Bedford Blues. In any spare time Roly has he and his friends get involved in fund raising for various charities. Phil Purvis (Senior Consultant South and South West)
Phil Purvis is a Forensic Collision Investigator and our Senior Consultant responsible for the Central South and South West. Phil served 30 years as a Police Officer of which 28 years have been in Road Policing. He has been involved in Road Traffic Accident Investigation since 1985 and has been in private practice since 2007.
Phil’s interest in Road Traffic Accident Investigation was first pricked when he attended a collision involving serious injuries and observed the skills of an experienced collision investigator (our CEO, Len Wayman). Having been mentored by Len whilst in the Police, Phil’s decision to join Wayman was quite natural. Phil states, “Knowing Len for many years (he was at one time my Sgt) and being aware of the type of work that Wayman undertake I felt I could have a role to play in the company. I also have instructional qualifications that will offer a source of diversity.”
Phil describes himself as loyal, dependable, trustworthy, and analytical. He enjoys the opportunity of explaining what to many is unexplainable. His primary objective when conducting an investigation is to ascertain the facts of what actually happened leading up to a collision. His methodical and open-minded approach when dealing with cases allows him to achieve this to an exacting standard.

Neil Salter (Senior Consultant South and West)
Neil Salter is a Forensic Collision Investigator and our Senior Consultant primarily responsible for the Southern and Western areas of the UK. He has also been instrumental in the development of our Fleet Analysis service. He has 22 years of police service much of which is in Roads Policing. In 2003 Neil joined the Dorset Police Collision Investigation Unit having decided that the challenge of assimilating the scantest of evidence, such as tyre marks or damage to vehicles, and then using this to determine what actually happened was one he would enjoy.
Upon leaving the Police service Neil was introduced to Wayman by our Principal Consultant, Dave Burgess. Neil explains his decision to join Wayman as follows, “Having worked as a Police Collision Investigator with other Officers that went on to become Wayman Consultants, I was aware of the high quality of experience, knowledge and professionalism associated with the company. Wayman sets the benchmark for this area of expertise, I knew that acceptance as a fellow consultant was an accolade in itself.”
Neil describes himself as taking nothing on face value, assessing and contrasting each piece of evidence until he can be confident he has the true picture. He draws great satisfaction from producing a full and comprehensive report that provides exact and precise detail of how an incident developed. This approach sits particularly well with his inquisitive and somewhat academic nature.

Neil lives in Dorset and draws great enjoyment from any cerebral challenge. Following a 6 year course of study leading to an OU honours degree in Social Sciences and Politics, he developed a keen interest in geo-politics with a particular accent on democratisation and the development of modernity-in social, cultural and political forms.
